Panama City is one of Latin America’s most cosmopolitan capitals, combining the intrigue and energy of its modern high-rise baking district with the laid back street life and Spanish colonial architecture of its historic city centre and the antiseptic order of the former US-controlled canal-zone suburbs.
With a spectacular setting on the Pacific coast, it’s close to some beautiful beaches and surrounded by some of the best-preserved and most accessible tropical rainforest in the Americas. It’s also the best base from which to explore the rest of Panama, including the canal.
Flights to PanamaPanama City is made up of two areas - old and new. The old part of the city is full of colonial buildings and narrow streets with small cafes. In contrast to this, the new area is fast moving with high-rise buildings, restaurants and nightclubs.
The Amador Causeway is a good place to relax - a set of islands that are joined to the mainland by a bridge. It is a great place to have a stroll around, take in the beautiful ocean and a lovely meal in one of the restaurants.
The National Theatre is the perfect place to take in a show and experience local folklore dances by local ethnic groups.
No visit to Panama can be without a trip to the Panama Canal. You can reach the Miraflores locks from the city centre to see ships enter the Canal. There is also a visitor's centre there and a restaurant. If you're not overloaded on information about the Canal after that, take a trip to the Panama Canal Museum that is located in a beautiful colonial building.
