San Jose
The capital of Costa Rica, San Jose, in the Central Valley is a laid back but busy city.The population of this city is probably half of the whole country. It contains the primary airport, the University of Costa Rica, the US' and other embassies and many museums, cultural venues, hotels, markets, etc. It is the hub of the country.
The main downtown area is a bustling collection of well-laid out streets filled with vehicles and lined with plain architecture of commercial buildings. Visitors may be initially put off by this. But look inside and enjoy the friendly people, and your impression will quickly change.
Costa Rica is an ecotourism heaven that is the jewel of Central America and the people here will be proud to remind you of that. The jungles are full of monkeys, lizards, crocodiles, exotic birds, and endangered sea turtles nest on the coasts.
San Jose's National Theatre is a fine example of the brilliant architecture here. It has lavish sculptures, paintings and marble staircases. It is just beautiful and should not be missed.
The Central Market is a great place to pick up some souvenirs and some great coffee products.
The Jade Museum is one of Costa Rica's most popular museums. It houses the world's largest collection of American jade. As well as the jade there are stonework and ceramic exhibitions to enjoy. Take a trip up to the 11th floor for good views over the city.
It is worth taking a day trip to the Pacific Rain Forest Aerial Tram. It is an ecotourism project of 222 acres of rainforest with waterfalls and views of the Pacific coast. It is a great opportunity to see wildlife in its natural habitat and the different plant life in a dry forest and a rain forest. As well as the tram ride they have trails and exhibitions. There is a private bus and a public bus service that operates from San Jose.
Flights to San Jose with Avianca
Juan Santamaria International Airport is located in Alajuela about 20 km from San Jose, Costa Rica. It is named after Costa Rica's national hero Juan Santamaria.
This airport, which is Costa Rica's primary airport, serves a great number of tourists from Canada, Europe and the United States.
Avianca is operating flights to San Jose and Bogota.
