Caracas
With a population around 4 million, Caracas is the capital and more populated city in Venezuela. It is located close to the Coast (La Guaira Port), but at an altitude of 800 meters (2400 feet), which gives it an unique climate.
Definitely for tourists, it is the best activity around the city, because of the beautiful view and the nice and cool weather. If you like hiking you can also make a three to four hour excursion, and return by cable car (or walking).
Caracas is also a cultural center. The museum of modern art, is one of the most important in south America. Caracas hosts every year an international Theater Festival, where you can see groups from all over the world.
Capitolio Nacional occupies a huge area with golden domes. It is most famous for Salon Eliptico - an oval hall with a mural covered dome. The surrounding halls are decorated with battle scenes to represent Venezuela's fight for Independence.
The Museo de Arte Colonial is housed in a beautiful colonial mansion and occasionally on Sundays you can see chamber music concerts in the old stables. The gardens here are just as magnificent as in the interior of the museum.
La Sabana Grande is a great place for shopping, and in the evenings for socialising in the many bars and restaurants.
El Avila is a very important mountain to the people of Caracas. It is a National Park and many locals take walks up there every day for the fresh air and wonderful views.
An interesting day trip from Caracas would be to Colonia Tovar, a town founded by the Germans with distinctive German features.
