Bogotá
Bogota Colombia’s noisy; grid locked and exciting capital is well worth a visit, despite its (largely undeserved) reputation for danger. The city’s lovely colonial quarter, La Candelaria, makes an atmospheric retreat from the city bustle, while other highlights include the world famous Museo de Oro and the monastery of Montserrate, perched high above the city and boasting wonderful views – not to mention one of the best club scenes in Latin America.
Bogota offers abundant contrasts: modern shopping malls and open-air markets, high-rise apartments and makeshift shanties, futuristic glass towers and colonial churches. Simultaneous displays of ostentatious wealth and shocking poverty have been a feature of life here for centuries. Bogota is also the political, financial and service centre for the country, and its geographic heart, making it a useful base from which to explore the country.
